Senior officials of the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) coalition have pledged to get rid of party members who break the rules and do not conform to the laws of the country.Standing at the podium Mrs. Cathy Hughes addresses the audience, with Presidential candidate (right)This is a major concern for citizens who continue to rebuke the current Administration for their “blatant” refusal to reprimand Ministers and other party associates who have broken the law or conducted some inappropriate act while holding public office or when entrusted with some level of power. The matter was one raised during a public candidate forum held at the Theatre Guild on Monday. With the upcoming General and Regional Elections, the public discussion gives citizens a chance to question the politicians on any issue concerning them. The question posed to APNU+AFC senior member Cathy Hughes and Presidential candidate Brigadier David Granger was the party’s position on the treatment of members or agents when they break the law or use their office/power to act against a citizen or the country.A female member of the audience asked the politicians about a Code of Conduct that would address representatives who sit at high levels of government. The woman asked, if in government, what would happen if one of the party’s members becomes involved in sexual harassment, domestic violence or any such matter.Granger responded that his party has already put forward two codes of service; one for Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs) and one for the National Assembly. He promised that after the May 11 election, if APNU+AFC gets into power, a Code of Conduct will also be constructed for Cabinet members.Hughes in a passionate response said that it is totally unacceptable to condone inappropriate behaviour by public figures. She said that in addition to supporting what the party leader said,Steve Bartkowski Falcons Jersey, the party’s position is that if members deviate from normal acceptable behaviour and engage in criminal activities, “then we will throw them out.”To a thunderous round of applause, Hughes stated further that, “There is no way we will be keeping on board anybody that displays unacceptable behaviour.”The issue of reprimanding deviant Parliamentarians was also one addressed when APNU+AFC visited the Essequibo Coast two Saturdays ago. Again it was the public pleading with the party that if they get into power, they do not follow the current Administration and shield their deviated members.Prominent businessman Sam Bacchus detailing a long list of government failures urged that the party adhere to the people’s wishes once voted in. He said that citizens want the power to recall their parliamentarians when they do not conform to the wishes of the people. The biggest argument which seems to support corruption allegations, even if that might not be the case, is the secrecy in which the Administration operates. For instance, Guyana is still to have access to all information concerning the Marriott Hotel, the Amaila Falls project, the CJIA expansion project which was signed in Jamaica and made public by journalists there, among several other major undertakings. This “blatant disrespect” for law and Parliament promoted several court actions. |
