Deputy Mayor, Robert Williams, yesterday expressed regret on behalf of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) for the present state of the landfill site located at the Le Repentir Cemetery.According to the Deputy Mayor, this site should have been closed by July 31, last, but for certain reasons this was not possible and an extension date for works to be seized at this site was scheduled for October 31, 2010.Williams told media officials that the contract which was awarded for transformation of the landfill site through the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) funding attracted services from B.K International, Pooran Brothers and the Local Government Ministry will ensure that the Haags-Bosch dumpsite becomes operational by January 31, 2011.In the meantime the M&CC will cease operation at the existing site that the contractor was originally supposed to have closed by now and there will be additional equipment put on site to eliminate the high build up of garbage presently at the dumpsite.Williams stated that a letter was written to the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development by the M&CC in order to find a solution for the issue of payment towards the upkeep of the present landfill site since this was proving to be too expensive for the M&CC and the council did not want an alternative of citizens paying additional taxes. He explained that currently it costs the M&CC “close to $500,China NFL Jerseys,000 per day” to maintain the five bulldozers and one excavator (sometimes two excavators) to move the heap of garbage, take the garbage to sites and manage the existing refuse.Williams said, “We welcome any intervention by Government. We cannot any longer accommodate waste at the temporary landfill site”.While speaking to the media, the Deputy Mayor added that the budget for the year 2011 is currently being prepared, and is scheduled to be completed by December 31, 2010 or the first week in January, 2011.He said that the budget will address the issue of the reduction of staff through non-filling of certain vacancies as well as restructuring to focus on core delivery services by the M&CC.Williams posited that focus will be placed on core delivery services which include drainage, solid waste, roads and other emergency works that require attention in 2011, such as the City Hall. |
