While physically challenged persons continue to struggle for the realization of a suitable social existence under the disability legislation, Young Voices Guyana (YVG) has been working to ensure that better social settings are available for persons with disabilities.YVG is comprised of young individuals with disabilities, who have been advocating for positive changes in this regard. The group, which was established in 2008, primarily focuses on the empowerment of youth with disabilities, and advocating for their rights.On Saturday, the group hosted a national conference at Umana Yana, where several members came together to discuss and assist in the process of implementing better conditions for the disabled.Among the topics discussed were the incapacity,Cheap Jerseys Store, education and employment structures to adequately cater for persons with special needs.YVG National Facilitator, Ganesh Singh, said that the group will be officially requesting the essential changes in the form of a petition, which will be presented to the National Assembly.“We have seen little improvement since the 2010 disability act was established.  We want the government to put part of the budget towards the development of special education, the improvement of employment system, skills and vocational training as well as better access to public service and building for those with disabilities.“We want to officially register our call for change; we want our voices to be heard, we want to make sure that we contribute to the development of Guyana,” Singh said.The conference brought together approximately 70 young people with different types of disabilities.  Mr. Singh said that this was the first national conference, and it attracted members from New Amsterdam, Georgetown and Linden.“We are developing a petition, which will be signed before it’s presented to Parliament. The focus of the agenda is the development of differently-able persons” he added.The facilitator told this newspaper that YVG has expanded its outreach.“Through the years, YVG has nurtured the development of differently able persons through workshops and seminars.  We have seen more confidence in our youth, who are now leaders within the disability movement.”He explained that YVG will soon be registered under the friendly society act. YVG is funded under the Leonard Cheshire Home, based in London and the European Union.
