Residents of Aliki, a farming community on East Bank Essequibo say that their children areDeplorable stairway of the Aliki Primary Schoolnot receiving the same quality of health care and education as children in other coastland communities.According to residents, the community has one school, the Aliki Primary School, which houses the nursery, primary and secondary levels. There are 83 students and only the Principal and another teacher make up the teaching staff. The residents said that they are often told that children are the future and education will help to alleviate poverty, yet theirs are not being provided with quality education. They said that the school is equipped with the requisite text books and other teaching materials. The parents stressed that they are unable to teach their children because of their own educational shortcomings and rely primarily on the teachers who are overwhelmed. As such, whenever students write their exams, the majority fail. However, the few who pass to attend secondary schools outside the village are unable to, owing to exorbitant transportation cost. This problem is common in neighbouring communities. They recommended that a secondary school be built in a community that will be easily reached by those who live along the river. They also emphasised that the physical structure of the school is deplorable. The building has no windows and documents are sometimes damaged when it rains heavily. In addition, the back stairway has no rails, while the school compound floods easily because of poor drainage. The head teacher’s house which is located next to the school is affected by flooding. The resident said that the head teacher is displeased with this situation and is considering leaving. The parents claimed that reports were made several times to the Regional Executive Officer and to the Department of Education but nothing was done. The residents noted that another issue affecting students is the unavailability of electricity. This makes after-school studies difficult. Only a few residents have generators. The residents stated that hinterland communities are receiving solar panels and questioned why they are not receiving the panels.Aliki Primary SchoolThey said that they have applied for laptops through the One Laptop Per Family programme but are wondering how the laptops will be powered. The absence of electricity in the community also poses difficulties for its health sector. The Health Centre is without a generator or solar panel, so storing medication and excess vaccine is challenging for the Community Health Worker. The health sector has limited human resources to meet the needs of the over 200 residents. There is only one health worker who operates on Mondays and Thursdays between 8:00am and 15:00hrs.According to residents he also has to service other communities along the river such as Lanaballi. Whenever the health worker is visiting other communities there is no one available to provide medical services. In cases of emergencies they are forced to go out of the community for medical attention. Recently, the health worker was out of the village for personal reasons resulting in the Health Centre reportedly being closed for almost one week.According to Dr. Narine Singh, Director of Regional Health Services, health centres in those communities only need one health worker. Assistance is provided by a medex. However, he was unable to say if one health worker has to service several communities at once. Nonetheless, the Health Ministry is currently training nurses and health workers.Dr. Narine pointed out that if the health worker is on leave or out of the area, a substitute worker is sent there. He was again unable to say why a temporary placement was not made in the case of Aliki. In relation to the cold storage, Dr. Narine stated that it would not have been feasible to put a solar panel fridge in the Health Centre. He related that the health centre does not have medication that requires that type of storage. Concerning vaccines, Dr. Narine stressed that these are stored in a central location,NFL Jerseys China, and when the health worker needs the vaccines he uplifts them. The excess could be stored in an ice cooler.
