A 40-year-old woman of Grass Field, Lusignan, has been remanded after being read a total of 31 charges relating to fraud.The accused, Chandrawattie Sedarie, made her appearance yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.It is alleged that between January and March this year she collected large sums of money from unsuspecting persons living on the East Coast of Demerara, while assuring them that she was in a position to acquire house lots for them.The court heard that the woman collected some M $9.4 from 31 persons from villages along the East Coast Demerara, while pretending to be an employee of the Ministry of Housing.To all 31 charges the woman pleaded not guilty. She is being represented by defense counsel, Euclin Gomes.In his bail application Gomes told the court that his client is a housewife and a mother of three with a fixed place of abode.He told the court that his client has been cooperating with the police since the beginning of the investigation and will be more than willing to attend trial since she wants to vindicate herself of the charges against her.He added that several other persons have been implicated but not charged.  Gomes said that his client is of meager means.However police prosecutor Stephen Telford objected to bail. He told the court that the investigations are still ongoing and more charges are likely to be laid. He explained to the court that Sedarie met a woman identified as Sophia Khan, who was at the time working with a Real Estate agency. According to Telford the two then worked together. They met people and showed enough proof that they were in the position to obtain house lots.The court was told that some of the virtual complainants in the matter were even showed their lots.Several of the virtual complainants in the matter who were present in court said that they merely wanted back their monies.One woman told the court that her husband is a fisherman and they borrowed money in order to pay for the house lot they were promised by the accused.Another VC broke into tears as she explained how her family made nights into days in order to come up with the money to pay for the house lot. After listening to the submissions by both the lawyer and the prosecution,Wholesale Jerseys, the Magistrate refused bail to the accused.Sedarie will make her next court appearance on August 30, at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
