After providing higher education for the past four decades, The Business School, located in the heart of the capital city of Georgetown,Cheap NFL Jerseys China, at 43 Brickdam, will be celebrating its 40th anniversary this month.The institution was transformed from a commercial school in 1975 into an institution of higher learning with a number of activities, including a special function for its founder, Ms Erma H. Bovell.Founder of the Business School Ms. Erma H. BovellMs Erma Bovell, religious leader and philanthropist, established The Business School in 1975.  Ms Bovell was passionate about providing young girls with a second opportunity at educating themselves academically, with the aim of them becoming independent and valuable contributors to society.In those early days, the school was referred to as a commercial school and the curriculum included English, Mathematics, Shorthand, Typewriting, Office Practices, among others.  Students were prepared mainly for the Pitman’s Secretarial Examinations in these subject areas.In 1987, the management of The Business School was transferred to James and Cindy Bovell.  In 1997 The Business School High School was established and by the next year a number of vocational and professional examinations were added to the school’s part-time and full-time curriculum.  These areas included Association of Accounting Technician (AAT) and London Chamber of Commerce (LCC).Today the college is a contemporary career focused educational mall catering for a wide range of academic programmes.  The academic programmes include Faculties for Business, Accounting, Science, Project Management, Marketing, Information Technology and Specialized Training.The college is accredited by a number of educational bodies including the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Association of Business Executives (ABE), Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) and the American Management Association (AMA).For the fortieth anniversary a special long-serving award will be given to a number of employees, including the longest serving employee, Ms Valerie Inniss. A plaque symbolizing this significant juncture in the history of the institution will be placed in the boardroom of the college.A number of activities, including an essay competition, community service activities and the granting of a few scholarships will be undertaken to mark this historical landmark.Graduates from these courses receive certification awarded by these bodies.  The Business School is committed to excellence in higher learning and is dedicated to a process of improving and maintaining standards as articulated by these accredited bodies and the National Accreditation Council of Guyana.The college’s corporate training department caters to the needs of small and medium sized enterprises (SME) within the private sector with the objective of improving the productivity of general, supervisory and managerial staff.The college has provided training for a number of organizations including NIS, GO INVEST, The Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Tourism, GTM, Sterling Products ANSA McAL among others.  Additionally, employees sponsored by their organizations attend the college on a yearly basis.Every year, the college equips graduates with the necessary training and skills to create positive changes in their work environment and communities.As part of their high school programme the institution provides 30 or more work study attachments within both the private and public sectors for students.  An average of 80 percent of students who go on work study are able to secure employment with these organizations.Ms. Erma Bovell who is responsible for the work study programme remarked that “it’s amazing how impressed employers are with our students placed on work study in their organizations.”Throughout the life of the college, the administration has been able to achieve a number of distinctions for students, lecturers and the institution.The Business School received top awards for ABE students in 2011, 2012 and 2013.  These students are Roxanne Schultz (2011), Shennel Gunraj (2012) and Tamara Rodney (2013). Also Mr. Jason Duport was awarded Best Lecturer in Personnel Management and Mr Paul Phillips was awarded Best Lecturer in Business.The high school continues to achieve high pass rates for students many of whom have gone on to achieve higher academic certification at the University of Guyana and abroad.How were you able to survive and develop The Business School over all these years?  Mr. Bovell remarked, “Our ability to survive and develop is due to us being able to adapt to changes and achieving success for our students.
