“She never gave us notice to move”Vendors plying their trade at the Stabroek Market wharf, yesterday refuted the claims by Acting Town Clerk,Air Max 97 Silver Womens, Carol Sooba, that they were served notices to move.Yesterday when a reporter visited the wrecked wharf area, some of the debris rested on top of stalls 63-65 while a tarpaulin was erected as a substitute shelter as the roof above had fallen. It was quite a scary sight considering the fact that the remainer of the roof could fall at anytime. The vendors are contending that the claims made by the Acting Town Clerk are untrue and misleading; they said that they would be willing to relocate if offered another spot. However they continue their trade at the endangered spots daily.“They ain’t really tell me nothing,” said one vendor who was reluctant to comment on the situation. While a man who was in her company stepped in and offered his opinion. He said that they are affected by the situation and there is urgent need for the repair of the wharf. He added that it is not safe for them as zinc sheets can come flying at anytime. “Zinc sheets don’t go to the river,Cheap NFL Jerseys China, is right here they gon fly and come.” After some prompting the woman who operates stall 63-65 admitted that it is not safe to be there. She said that she is comfortable there but because of the falling wharf she would go to wherever she is relocated.Another vendor who gave her name as Ms. Jacobs said, “(Sooba) never gave us notice to move. They had one meeting in which they told us that they will locate a place for us,Wholesale Jerseys, so that we can move and they can repair. But they never came back to us and say anything” she said. The woman continued her dismissal of Sooba’s claims. “Nothing like that never happen! And I’m a stall holder here; I have three stalls here and I never got a notice from them.” She added that if offered a spot to relocate she will move.“If they give us a spot to continue our trade I will move. This is my livelihood! I have bills and children to take care of, so I would not just shut down without somewhere else to go…”She expressed disgust over Sooba’s statement to wit that “some of the vendors are stubborn,Cheap Soccer Jerseys, and not concerned about their own safety, so they chose to remain there.”It is alarming that persons are expressing fear of being victimized if they voice their concerns, not only about matters concerning the dilapidated wharf but also about other issues around the market place. “I can’t say nothing,Wholesale NFL Jerseys China, I am being looked at and if I talk I will be victimized,” one man said.“I have children to mind and you wouldn’t want me not to be able to mind them; Right?”“I will continue my trade at my own risk,” further emphasizing his need to maintain his family.Attempts to reach the stallholders whose stalls were crushed on Saturday were unsuccessful.Following Saturday’s mishap of a section of the Stabroek Market Wharf collapsing crushing a stall below, Acting Town Clerk, Carol Sooba,Wholesale Jerseys, said that the vendors were served with written warnings to remove for their own safety from the deteriorating section of the market.Months earlier, another part of the wharf had collapsed but the warning signs that were sent by the Administration of the City Constabulary were ignored by the vendors, said Sooba. Her claims were contradicted by Mayor Hamilton Green. He said that the resources are not available for the repairs to the dilapidated wharf. He lamented that the decisions made by the Mayor and Council are being challenged by the Acting Town Clerk, Carol Sooba. As such, effective measures cannot be taken. |
