Yesterday marked the beginning of Islam Awareness Week and to kick-start the week-long celebration, the Guyana Islamic Trust (GIT) launched a cleanup campaign in the Waterloo Street area.Members of the Guyana Islamic Trust during yesterday’s exercise.According to member of the GIT, Farina Yusuf, the aim of the campaign is to raise awareness among Guyanese about the importance of keeping their environment clean. Ms. Yusuf told this publication that the cleanup campaign started a few weeks ago and to date areas targeted include the Woolford Avenue environs, Albouystown and East Street. To augment the cleanup campaign, which saw many youths and in some cases residents participating, several ‘Do not litter’ signs were erected reminding persons of the penalty if they are caught littering.Another participant, Mr. Nazar Mohammed said he was pleased to be a part of the campaign, noting that they have received assistance from the government. He said that a garbage truck was made available to the group as well as garbage bags and gloves. According to Mohammed these exercises will not be a one off activity as efforts will be made to maintain these areas for at least a one year period. He added too, that the initiative is a joint effort with the Guyana Muslim Environment Initiative.In addition to this, Mohamed said, as they continue in their effort to raise awareness about the importance of having clean surroundings,Cheap China Jerseys, there will be lectures in schools with the aim of getting the message across.He also urged residents of the areas where the campaigns are being held to get involved and play their part in keeping their surroundings clean. |
