“I will consider it an honour,” and will carry out my discharge diligently. This was the response of People’s Progressive Party’s General Secretary, Donald Ramotar, when asked yesterday if he would accept the presidential nomination to contest in 2011.PPP’s General Secretary, Donald RamotarHe made the disclosure during an end of year press briefing where he formally announced that the party has begun preparations for identifying a presidential candidate for the 2011 General Elections.Ramotar in the past has made no qualms about his intentions to contest the upcoming general elections but did say that all of the other names that have been promoted in the press recently are capable.“We have no shortage of leaders,” said Ramotar referring to the potential presidential contenders.Ramotar also explained during the press briefing that at present the discussions are very preliminary in that there have been no nominations as yet but whoever is successful will be announced some time early next year.He is quoted as saying that there is no timeline set for the completion of the process adding that unlike the last two general elections, there is no automatic presidential candidate for the party, owing to the ineligibility of President Bharrat Jagdeo to seek re-election due to a constitutional term-limit.In the run-up to 2011, Ramotar has been identified as a possible candidate for the party, as have Speaker of the National Assembly Ralph Ramkarran,Cheap Jerseys Wholesale, Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud and Sports Minister Frank Anthony and Party stalwart Moses Nagamootoo.Ramotar has been the General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) since 1997, as well as a member of the party’s Central and Executive Committees.He was unanimously elected as the General Secretary of the PPP on March 29, 1997, succeeding Cheddi Jagan, who died earlier in the month.At the PPP’s 29th Congress, he was re-elected to its Central Committee on August 2, 2008, receiving the fourth-highest number of votes.Following the Congress, he was re-elected by the Central Committee as General Secretary on August 12, 2008, without opposition he was also elected to the editorial board of the PPP paper Thunder. |
