Once again, residents of riverain communities especially those along the Demerara River are pleading with the relevant authorities to look into the issue of overtopping. In some areas they say that the sea defence works are being breached.For the past few weeks residents of Eccles and Ruimveldt have been complaining about their homes being under water as a result of high tides. The situation has been no different at other locations that border the river. There were numerous complaints from the residents of Craig.When this publication visited the wharf located behind Ruimveldt Police Station, water was seen over-topping the koker. An employee of a fishing company at the said wharf confirmed that it was a little while back that work was carried out on the said defence.He said that today with the high tide there is still flooding.Persons living in the affected communities say that they are scared of their livelihood being affected by the rise in the sea water. One villager told reporters that she believes that her community is being neglected.A resident of Eccles stated that the flood waters have become a norm; complaints to the authorities are not seeing any result, she said. Another added that there is a catchment area right before the sea dam at Craig.
