Dr Yesu Persaud involved in projectThe Indian Government, particularly the West Bengal government, is set to unveil a memorial monument, dedicated to the people who were sent as indentured labourers to various countries around the world, including Guyana, the Economic Times of India has reported.Guyanese industrialist, Dr Yesu Persaud,Nicolas Castillo Jersey, is among Indians of note worldwide who were roped in to see the project to fruition.According to the report, the memorial is being unveiled at Kolkata port – from where thousands of men and women set sail for various destinations around the world to work as indentured labourers at British plantations.The Global Indo Diaspora Heritage Society (GIDHS),Felipe Gutierrez Jersey, which was set up to establish the memorial at a location which has emotional and physical connect for the descendants of the indentured workers,Jeremy Mathieu Jersey, now plans to establish a museum and resource centre of emigration records,Alex Song Barcelona Jersey, writings, films and other memorabilia from the colonial emigration period in the 19th and 20th centuries.“Our long-term goal has been to establish the commemorative memorial in Kolkata followed by a museum and a resource centre that will connect the descendants of indentured workers with the history of their ancestors who left India from 1834 and 1920. This will be a lasting legacy to present and future generations of their descendants,” says Ashook Ramsaran, a US-based engineer who is the executive vice-president of the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO).Ramsarran was born in Guyana. His great-grandfather had come to these shores as an indentured labourer in 1853.Many other People of Indian Origins with similar background from countries such as Trinidad,Charles Aranguiz Chile Jersey, Suriname,Gerard Gumbau Jersey, South Africa,Paulo Garces Jersey, Fiji, Mauritius and Malaysia have been involved with the project.Vayalar Ravi,Jordi Alba Jersey, Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA), will preside over the special ceremony to unveil a ceremonial plaque on January 11.Also in attendance will be other officials of MOIA, officials of Ministry of Port Trust, officials of West Bengal Government,Adriano Jersey, GOPIO International, representatives of governments worldwide where Indian immigrations live, historians and academicians.The first set on Indian indentured workers came to Guyana on May 5, 1838. |
