A 25-year-old man accused of stealing his father’s shotgun escaped a possible jail sentence after his father said he was mentally ill.Christopher Da Silva was charged with simple larceny and appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry after it was alleged that he stole a firearm belonging to his father, Lionel Da Silva.The man who resides at Lot 316 Middle Street, North Cummingsburg, was said to have stolen the 12-guage shotgun from his businessman father last week Monday. The gun is valued at $150,000.Information revealed that the father and son lives in the same house. On November 14th, the elder Da Silva secured his bedroom where the gun was usually kept.The following day, a taxi driver brought a copy of the businessman’s firearm licence to his home and said that it was left in his car. He later took police to the gun.The defendant was represented by Defense Attorney, George Thomas, who said that his client was mentally ill.He was granted $250,000 bail and the matter was transferred.However, the defendant’s father later appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell and asked that the case be dismissed.He told the court that his son takes medication and would suffer in the lockups.The matter was dismissed. |
