Thousands of Berbicians flocked the various Masjids and homes of prominent Muslims yesterday during the traditional distribution of beef.Imam Faizal M. Jaffarally stated that over 3,000 animals were slaughtered in the country in all of the mosques and meat distributed to the needy. At the Central Jama Masjid, yesterday, where more than two dozen animals were sacrificed; and there was a sizeable crowd in a long line that ended on the roadway. Persons were eagerly awaiting their portion of beef.While over at the home of prominent businessman, Mr. Hazrat Ali, there was also a crowd of persons waiting in the hot afternoon sun.Jaffarally said it was a day of reflection “of the Prophet Ibrahim and his son, Ishmael, showing total obedience to God Almighty.” He said that while the meat or blood of the animals slaughtered is not of real importance, it is the sincerity of the act of giving.This lesson, he noted, can and should be transferred into everyday lives of Guyanese whereas we should make more sacrifices. “Too often we refuse to do the little things that can make us better human beings, like living good with our neighbours…and parents.”Guyanese, especially politicians, he stated, can learn much lessons from Eid. “We can able to have tolerance for each other and communicate…have better conversations.” The present state of the country and world, he said, demands a national and worldwide conversation.One-third of the meat belongs to Muslims; one-third to friends and family and the rest for the poor and needy. The official added, “It is something that Muslims take very, very serious—the sacrifice—and there is tremendous blessings. We believe once you are in a position to do the sacrifice and you have failed to do it, you have committed a grave sin.”
